PAINTINGS, SCULPTURES & EMBROIDERIES
Painter and sculptor, David Bromley comes to the Rice Polak Gallery from “the land down under.” Born in England, Bromley moved to Australia and never left his new found homeland. Bromley has achieved such note that he has been exhibited in galleries in London, Paris, Tokyo and Singapore as well as the United States. His unique ouevre places him outside the mainstream of traditional gallery art. Working in the style of World War II era children’s illustration, the multi-talented artist creates works in a variety of media and forms. Aside from large-scale paintings, there are bas-relief cut-out figures on painted panel, a marvelous series of embroidered paintings in which outlined figures are rendered in stitchery upon painted grounds and complete, hand-made art books. Each work portrays children and or the accouterments of childhood and its activities. However, the works go far beyond mere illustration, delving into the psyche of not only the child but of the artist and viewer as well.
